If you skipped my post

Pastor Wendell came to our church when I was six. He baptized me, married me and my husband, and baptized both of my kids. In thirty years he never preached one sermon about the end of the world.

Then he came home from a mission trip in 2024, stepped down, sold his house and moved to Montana. Two years of silence. Last Tuesday a Bible showed up on my porch with a sheet of notebook paper inside the cover. Four verses. No letter.

When he finally answered the phone, he walked me through every one of them. This is that paper, verse by verse, with the pages he had me open.

“Bread is only half of it. Every word is the other half.”Pastor Wendell, on the phone, Thursday afternoon

Verses 1 and 2 on the paper

A day's work for one day's bread

He had me read the third seal out loud, standing in my kitchen.

“And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.”Revelation 6:5–6

“What do people use scales for?” he asked. Weighing things. “You weigh what is short. Nobody weighs what there is plenty of.”

Then the second verse on the paper:

“And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.”Matthew 20:2

He didn't explain it. He let me work it out with my finger on the page.

Matthew 20:21 penny= one full day of work
Revelation 6:61 penny= one measure of wheat
SoA whole dayfor one day's bread, and nothing left over

I said, “That is groceries.” He said, “That is groceries.”

And the part nobody quotes: hurt not the oil and the wine. The bread gets weighed. The expensive things are left alone. Then he sent me to a verse I had never read in my life:

“…they shall eat bread by weight, and with care…”Ezekiel 4:16

Bread by weight. A limit per customer, written down thousands of years before anybody built a grocery store.

Verse 4 on the paper

Read the order, not just the words

He said he preached Matthew 24 for thirty years and never noticed the word order until the plane ride home.

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars… For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines…”Matthew 24:6–7

“Wars first. Then famine. Not at the same time. After.”

Then one more, for every week the news says they're close to a deal:

“For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them…”1 Thessalonians 5:3
Verse 3 · the one he mailed me a box about

“Not a famine of bread”

“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.”Amos 8:11

“Everything I just had you read is about bread,” he said. “Now watch what Jesus did with bread.”

Forty days in the wilderness with nothing to eat, and the devil comes to Him with the one thing a starving man wants. Turn these stones into bread. Jesus answers him out of Moses:

“It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”Matthew 4:4 (quoting Deuteronomy 8:3)

“He was starving, and He still said bread is only half of it. Every word is the other half. Fill your pantry if you want to. That's the easy half. Every store in America still sells bread. Amos is telling you the other half runs short too.”

“And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.”Amos 8:12

“Read that again,” he said. “They're not people who never cared. They're looking. They're running. And they can't find it.”

The test he gave me in my own kitchen

He asked if I had a Bible in the house. I said I had four. He said, “Turn to Jude, the little book right before Revelation. Verse fourteen. I'll wait.”

Every Bible in my house · Jude 14

“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints…”

Jude is quoting a book. Find it.
The Book of Enoch · 1:9

“And behold! He cometh with ten thousands of ⌈ His ⌉ holy ones To execute judgement upon all…”

The book he's quoting.

So I went looking for it.

“Count them,” he said. “Four Bibles in your house, and not one of them has the book your Bible is quoting. That's what Amos meant. It doesn't start with no Bibles. It starts with Bibles that have pages missing, and nobody noticing.”

The famine was already in my kitchen. I had just never gone looking.

Where the book went, and who it was written for

Enoch was never printed in the King James, not even in 1611. And the King James itself got shorter: the first one, in 1611, printed 80 books. In 1826 a Bible society in London voted to stop printing fourteen of them.

But one church never made its Bible shorter. Ethiopia is in your Bible, in Acts 8: an Ethiopian official reading Isaiah in his chariot, baptized by the side of the road. The church there kept the Scriptures for something like 1,500 years, Enoch and Jubilees included.

And this is the page that made me put the phone down. Enoch says, on his first page, who he was writing for:

THE BOOK OF ENOCHCHAPTER 1

1 The words of the blessing of Enoch, wherewith he blessed the elect and righteous, who will be living in the day of tribulation, when all the wicked and godless are to be removed.

2 And he took up his parable and said—Enoch a righteous man, whose eyes were opened by God, saw the vision of the Holy One in the heavens, which the angels showed me, and from them I heard everything, and from them I understood as I saw, but not for this generation, but for a remote one which is for to come.

“He didn't hide any of it,” Wendell said. “He wrote it down, he put who it was for on the first line, and he assumed somebody would keep it. Ethiopia did.”

Every word. Not most of them.

I asked him why it had to be the whole thing. Paper is paper, right? He said, “A Bible on paper with the pages missing is still missing them. Paper keeps what's in it. It can't give you back what was cut out.”

“That's what Jesus said a person lives by,” he said. “Every word. You find out which kind of Bible you bought the first time your kid asks you something and the answer was in the part that got cut.”

The three places he told me to start

“Don't try to read all of it,” he said. “That's the first thing people get wrong. Read three things this month, while nothing depends on it.”

1 · The first chapter of Enoch

You just read it, above. Who it was written for.

2 · Jubilees 10

After the flood, the spirits went after Noah's grandsons. Here's what Noah did:

THE BOOK OF JUBILEESCHAPTER 10

1 …unclean demons began corrupting Noah's descendants, leading them astray and bringing destruction upon them.

2 Noah's sons approached their father and reported how demons were deceiving, blinding, and destroying his grandsons.

3 Noah prayed before Yahweh his God, saying: ‘God of all flesh's spirits, You who showed me mercy and rescued me and my sons from the flood waters… Extend Your grace to my sons and prevent wicked spirits from ruling over them, lest they destroy them from the earth.

9 He replied: ‘Let one-tenth remain with him, and let nine-tenths descend to the place of condemnation.’

A father praying over his kids' kids, in the days right after the worst thing that ever happened to the world. I read it with Owen asleep down the hall.

3 · The Book of the Covenant

Books 86 and 87, at the very back. It's an early church writing the Ethiopian church kept, set as the risen Jesus answering His disciples. They ask Him about the end again:

THE BOOK OF THE COVENANT ICHAPTERS 2–3

2 And Peter and John answered and said unto Him:—Tell us, O our Lord, the signs of the end, and all the deeds which shall then be done by them who live in this world…

3 And Jesus answered and said:—In the time when I was in the world, I spoke unto you before I should be glorified, of signs that the end is near, thus:—that there shall be on earth famines and pestilences, tumults, and commotions, risings of nations against nations, and those other things whereof I have told you. But I commanded you to watch and pray.

Same famines. Same nations rising. And no date. An order instead: watch and pray. Most of the rest of the book is exactly that: how the early church prayed, and when, while it waited.

Wendell's four checks

“Don't take my word for one thing I've told you,” he said. “Most of what gets sold to people who are worried is junk. Do these four things first.”

1
Do the penny mathRead Revelation 6:5–6, then Matthew 20:2. Work out on paper what a penny bought and what a penny paid.
2
Run the kitchen testRead Jude 14. Then look for the book he's quoting on your own contents page.
3
Count the 1611Look up the first King James and count the books. Then count yours.
4
Read the orderMatthew 24, then Amos 8:11. Then watch the evening news, and decide for yourself which part of the order we're standing in.
And before you pay for any Ethiopian Bible: look at the contents page. If Enoch, Jubilees and the Book of the Covenant aren't on it, it isn't the whole book.

What happened in our house that week

Night 1After the kids were down, I opened my old King James to Jude 14. Then the new one to Enoch 1 and found the words Jude was quoting. I sat at the kitchen table a long time.
Next morningI handed Owen the book and told him Jude was quoting somebody and I needed help finding him. He found it in about four minutes, then read it to his little sister twice. His copy has a note inside the cover now: “Jude 14. Now find the book he's quoting.”
SaturdayMy husband, who'd told me I was being dramatic, read the paper himself. Not the verses. The handwriting. Wendell married us. He went to the garage, came back with the old reading lamp, and asked which book to start with.
SundayMy sister Rachel, who said Wendell went off the deep end, opened Jude 14 in her own kitchen with her daughter beside her. She ordered one more, for her husband's mother.
WednesdayI finally sent it to my moms' Bible study. Eleven of fourteen wrote back within the hour. Every one had looked for Enoch in her own Bible. Not one found it.
NowThe news doesn't hit me the way it did. When the man in the suit says peace, I still hear it. But I know which part of the order I'm hearing, and I know what Enoch wrote to the ones living in it.
“Let not your spirit be troubled on account of the times; For the Holy and Great One has appointed days for all things.”Enoch 92:2

And I'm not scared of Owen's questions anymore. When he brings me something from one of those videos, I don't say “nobody really knows.” I go get the book.

Before you order: five honest answers

Do I have to stop using my Bible?

No. Mine is still on my nightstand. This one answers the questions yours raises and doesn't explain, like who Jude was quoting.

Isn't this adding to Scripture?

Nobody is adding a word to the 66. They're all in here, untouched. Enoch is the book Jude quoted, the one found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the one the Ethiopian church never stopped copying. Read it beside the Bible you already trust and judge it by that.

Is this a scam?

Run Wendell's checks on any Ethiopian Bible, this one included. Count the contents page. Open Jude 14 and Enoch 1:9 side by side. It ships from California and Pennsylvania, and real people answer the support email.

Is the print small?

No. It's two columns, with print bigger than most Bibles.

What if it isn't what you said?

You get a full year with it. If it isn't what I've told you, return it in good condition within 365 days for a refund of the price. You cover return shipping.

It's probably for you if

  • You've read Matthew 24 your whole life and never noticed the order
  • There's a Bible in every room of your house, and you've never once held the book Jude quotes
  • Your kids take their questions to a phone before they bring them to you
  • Somebody in your family has called you dramatic about the news this year

Two houses

The Faith Made Ethiopian Bible

One day the famine Amos wrote about reaches every house. In one house, a boy asks his mom a question about the end, and the only thing that answers him is the phone in his hand.

In the other, his mom opens a book that was written for the people living in it, and reads it to him out loud.

I know which house mine is. Now my sister's is too.

P.S. Before you believe a word of this, do what Wendell made me do. Open your Bible to Jude 14 tonight and look for the book he's quoting. When yours comes, turn to Enoch 1:9. If they don't say the same thing, send it back.

P.P.S. “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Proverbs 22:3. That's the verse Wendell told me to give my sister. I'm giving it to you.
